Learn how this mom radically improved her family’s indoor air quality by going chemical free. (And accidentally started a lucrative business in the process.)
Going chemical free and living a nontoxic lifestyle in this day and age is no small task. But that’s just the challenge that Sandra Gordon put her mind to in 2014.
Sandra had read an article about the different ways she could turn her household into a much healthier environment for her family. And she had the motivation to do so.
The statistics on indoor air pollution are striking. And the chemicals most of us used were a big factor in poor air quality, which Sandra now simply calls “poisoned air.”
Here are the indoor air pollution facts, put out by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, that put Sandra on the war path to eliminate toxins in her home:
- We spend about 90% of our time indoors.
- The quality of indoor air can be two to five times (and even up to 100 times) more polluted than the worst outside air.
- The EPA has ranked indoor air pollution among the top five environmental dangers.
- There has been an alarming increase in the number of children with severe allergies and asthma.
- Allergies, asthma, lung cancer and heart problems have all been linked to poor air quality.
- You and your family members each inhale approximately 15,000 or more quarts of air per day.
A large contributing factor, among others like smoking, fireplaces, and carbon monoxide levels, are the cleaning chemicals, glues and pastes, and personal care products found in most homes.
“I felt like this was going to be a huge job if I didn’t find something I could change in our home quickly.” said Sandra. “The easiest place to start, for me, was with the cleaning products and personal care items we all used.”
And thus, Sandra’s search for nontoxic replacements began…
It’s one thing to decide you’re going to go nontoxic and chemical free. It’s another when you take a look under your sink and realize you have to find an effective replacement for all that stuff.
“Then you go into your laundry room and look at the laundry soap, the softener, and the dryer sheets and realize, for all their negatives, my family likes the result of these chemicals.” Sandra said. “They like the smells, softness, and I liked how clean our clothes always seemed.”
The problem turned out to be one of education and not that there weren’t effective replacements for the chemicals in Sandra’s home. She went on a mission to learn more about alternatives to chemicals and toxins that were at least as effective, if not better, than what she was using before.
The all-natural discovery that gave Sandra the power to replace every single toxic cleaning product in her home…
Sandra was researching online one evening and came across an article talking about how to replace chemical cleaners and detergents with essential oils. “At first I was like, no way would these oils do the job of the chemicals she was using. No way!” Sandra said.
But she was determined and dug deeper, despite her concern she was wasting her time thinking about oils. She tried a few things she’d found online and was impressed with the cleaning power of oils. In every test she did, the oils performed as well or better than the chemical cleaners she was used to using.
She was hooked and began replacing chemical cleaners with essential oil blends all over the house.
Then came an unexpected income source Sandra stumbled upon during her switch to a nontoxic home…
“This was like the cherry on top.” Sandra said. “I had no idea that my efforts to clean up our home and create a chemical free environment for my family would come with another huge benefit for us.”
Because Sandra had been talking to her friends all along her journey to clean up her home environment, they were keen to discover what she was finding. Once she told them that she’d successfully cleaned out all the toxic chemical cleaners, their laundry soap, softener, and dryer sheets, and other family personal care products like deodorant and toothpaste “They leaned in pretty hard to hear more!” said Sandra.
“The company I chose to get my products from had a kind of referral program. So once I told my friends what I had done, they wanted to know how to do it too. Long story short, just by telling my friends and others about my discovery and our new clean home, I quickly built a $500 a month residual income” Sandra said.
“Today, after about 1 year, my monthly income from doing something that had a positive effect on my family in the first place, averages around $2500. And it’s growing faster every month!”
This was amazing to Sandra, since all she had set out to do was clean up her family’s home and go chemical free. She never dreamed it would lead to a solid income. Which she also needed but figured she was just going to have to get a side job to take care of financial needs.
“At no time during my researching and replacing chemicals with essential oil products did I think to myself ‘I wonder how I could make money with this?’” Sandra said. “It just happened.”
Today, Sandra says she’s very happy to help other families go chemical-free and nontoxic to protect their health. She’s made helping people a part-time job that she runs entirely from her chemical-free home. And she’s sure that it will become much more than it is today as she continues her journey.
